The Wonder of Christmas

Today’s post is written by Moriah Schairer, a long-time friend and one of my first writing compatriots. I hope you’re blessed by her perspective as a mother with two young children.

This is the first Christmas where my kids understand. My eldest understands that come Christmas, there will be presents under the tree. He requested Santa bring books. My youngest understands that Christmas means lights (his favorite thing in the world).

There’s something amazing about experiencing Christmas with a child you’re close to. You are given an opportunity to relive all those firsts.

The first time you watch a certain Christmas movie or the first time they’re able to participate in decorating a tree. The first time they can make cookies and do the sprinkles all by themselves. The first time they watch Christmas fireworks or the first time you see the light displays sparkle in their eyes. And all of that is wonderful, and good. But not enough. It’s not the true wonder if Christmas.

The true wonder of Christmas is that God sent His Son to Earth. The fact alone is mind boggling. At the end of every night, when the kids are in bed. I turn off all the lights. Except the Christmas tree. The soft fade from color to white back to color again is gentle like a beating heart. It calls one to be still.

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalms 46:10 NLT

There in the quiet, it’s time to reflect the wonder of Christmas. Time to reflect that itty bitty baby born in Bethlehem. Who came to save us from our sins. He did so selflessly. That is a wonder.
